Employee motivation

Figure 1- motivation words

Employee motivation is a key pillar for success of the organisation since motivated employees are more creative, team oriented and produce results more than what is expected from them.

If employees feel that their inputs such as efforts, commitment, loyalty, trust, and enthusiasm to the organization are fairly and adequately rewarded by outputs such as financial and non-financial benefits or incentives, they remain motivated and continue to provide inputs towards higher productivity. Employees get de-motivated due to the perceived absence of such equity. (Ahmad et al, 2010)

On this regard Maslow has initially develop Maslows’ Hierarchy of needs theory which is known as one of the best motivational theories of the world where he later develops this module adding cognitive, Aesthetic and Transcendence needs

Figure 2 : Maslow's surprisingly interesting Need Hierarchy Theory of Motivation – Careershodh

According to these employees are required different needs to motivate them according to their achievements’ in their professional career.

As such initially they require basics needs such as Food, water, clothes etc. Which will basically be covered by their remuneration. However, when they received those benefits over a period of time, they are tending to seek second set of needs which are consider as Safety needs. Accordingly, they are in search of their job security, sufficient savings from their salary and personal well-being are the primary motivating factors.

Once they adopted to safety needs they further have their interest on social needs such as growing friendship, caring for their family etc, as key motivational factors. Thereafter they are anticipation are towards Esteem needs which will give them the proper recognition/attention among other staff and freedom in the work place. Finally, after being full filled from the above mention four stages employee comes to the self-actualization level where he seeks more satisfaction in the work place.

Apart from the said factors another key tools of identifying motivational factors are Extrinsic motivation and intrinsic motivation. Please refer below video for proper explanation of the same;

According to the video it is understood that we could offer extrinsic motivation theories more towards achieving primary targets such as sales targets and if you really want to have creative work force with passion who are trying to exceed management expectations always then you need to maintain intrinsic motivational factors in the organisation.

Intrinsic motivational factors help to develop inner soul of employees and they are engaging in the work allocated them to in a manner that they want to do by them self not because of that they required to do it. Therefore we need to care our employees and need to recognize their contribution towards the company and need to reward them in order to keep their motivational levels high.

Conclusion

It is understood that motivated employees are affecting the achievements of the organisation in a positive manner. Also, employee to employee there are different types of motivational factors are affecting their motivational level, therefore management need to identify the best combination of processes to improve motivational level of employee such as giving realistic targets for achievement, giving them proper work life balance, recognition, appreciations, rewards, freedom and an attractive remuneration to continuously keep the motivational levels intact.
